A soul is the metaphysical essence of a mortal creature, formed from the Quintessence of the Positive Energy Plane. While the exact process is not well understood, pieces of the plane are known to travel through the Astral Sea to reach the Material Plane. It is theorized that a soul's path through the Astral Sea and the planes that it passes near influence the personality and fate of the mortal it will come to inhabit. Creatures native to the Elemental Planes do not have souls, and are instead formed from the Quintessence of the plane they are native to.

When a mortal creature dies, its soul is typically released from its body and begins it's journey back to the positive energy plane. While new souls pass near the other planes of existence on their way to a body, when they travel back they are subject to several attractors in the form of Conceptual Planes. While all of the Conceptual Planes exert some pull on souls, they do not all pull in equal amounts on all souls. Souls that are drawn into a plane on their journey become petitioners. The exact effect varies from one plane to another, but most are gradually transformed by the plane to become new creatures.
