In the deadly, unforgiving deserts is a collection of nomadic tribes of Lizardfolk known as the Jiajieru (GEE-ah-GEE-err-you). Rarely ever do they come in contact with other humanoids, these tribes wander the sandy wastes of Alcotlan, fighting for food and survival daily. With barely over a hundred living members at a time, the Lizardfolk have little need for strict political structure, but a Leader and a Guide work in tandem to protect them. The Leader is the most powerful and cunning warrior who acts as chief, the Guide is a sort of shaman that communes with nature to grant them safe passage and sustenance.

In the very hottest and driest season the tribe migrates to an ancient, sacred oasis in the sands, one only the guide can find the way to. Fruits, ponds, and green leafy respite stretches up in a magical grove, and here all the children are born. A representative, called an Egg Mother, of the Lizardfolk deity Semuanya is chosen to watch over the hatchlings. The newborns stay in the oasis and learn of their people and the desert through the Egg Mother for the first 5 years of life, before joining the tribe in the wastes.

The Jiia, as outsiders often refer to them as, are the only culture that speaks Hɜɜlâ, though some travelers and guides that live nearby have picked up the language to facilitate trade.

Leadership

Most tribes are headed by 2 members, the Zûkalii and the Næsi. The Næsi is the spiritual leader of the tribe and offers guidance on religious and medicinal matters in the tribe, while the Zûkalii is responsible for hunting/gathering parties and the general movement of the tribe across Alcotlan.
