The Planar Mesh is one of the more widely believed views of the multiverse. In it, all the planes of existence are represented as spheres of various sizes arranged in a geometric pattern.
The Elemental Planes form the base structure of the cosmos with the Material Plane at the center. Each of the 4 base elements form a line of planes reaching out from the Material Plane. In each of these lines, there are 3 planes associated with the element; a positively charged essence of the base element, the base element itself, and a negatively charged essence of the element. As an example, the Fire line consists of the Plane of Ash, the Plane of Fire, and the Plane of Radiance.
Each of the 4 base elements may also blend with any of the others, creating another, smaller, line of planes halfway between each of the base lines. These smaller lines are also composed of 3 components in the same way as the core lines.
The Conceptual Planes are much less rigid in their positioning. Rather than lying along strict lines of plane, they float around in the Astral Sea that fills the empty space between the planes. While these planes are not locked into position, they do tend to form clusters with similar concepts. It is theorized that the movement of these clusters and the individual planes that compose them accounts for shifts in power and general outlook in the Material Plane.
History
While the Energy, Elemental, and Material Planes have existed since the dawn of time, the Fey Sphere and Conceptual planes are a relatively new addition to the cosmos. In the year 1 UR, another planar collection collided with the Planar Mesh. This other grouping was much less tightly bound, and as a result shattered. The core of the other group now exists as the Fey Sphere, while the remnants of its other planes coalesced into the empty spaces between the Elemental Planes to form the Conceptual Planes over the following decades.
This greatly effected the lives of all creatures on the Material plane, as the new Conceptual planes offered a place for Deities to claim domain over and new attractors for souls as they make their way back to the Positive Energy Plane.
