Petitioners are the souls of mortal creatures that have travelled to another Plane after death. After leaving the plane where the mortal died, they begin making their way towards the Positive Energy Plane. Along the way, aspects of how the mortal led their life influence the path that their soul takes. While the vast majority end their journey by passing into the Positive Energy Plane and entering the cycle of reincarnation, some instead enter other planes on their journey.
Upon entering a plane other than the Positive Energy Plane, the soul begins absorbing the Quintessence of the plane they entered. The specifics of this process vary from one plane to the next, but this process generally results in the soul transforming into a Petitioner and gaining a new physical form.
Physical Form
As a result of absorbing the quintessence of a plane, there is no longer a meaningful distinction between the soul and body of a Petitioner; when its physical form is destroyed, the soul is irrevocably destroyed as well. If this occurs on the plane in which it was created, the quintessence is re-absorbed into the plane itself. If this occurs as a result of a Petitioner physically travelling to another plane via methods other than summoning, it's quintessence stains the local area of the plane on which it was destroyed.
